El jardín romántico del XIX como espacio público urbano: los jardines de Monforte en Valencia

Abstract

Romanticism and eclecticism marked the way of the arts for much of the 19th century. Garden architecture, is one of the arts that exemplifies these precepts. On the one hand, the prevailing historicism generalized the interest for the styles of the past. In the case of gardens, Italian Renaissance, French Baroque and English Picturesque, were the references used by architects and gardeners in the 19th century designs. On the other hand, social changes of the 19th century generated new urban needs, such as urban parks of various scales. Some private gardens eventually became part of the city as a public space for citizen enjoyment. The genesis and subsequent evolution of Monforte Gardens in Valencia, exemplify and highlight all these aesthetic, historical and social considerations.
