Urban and architectonic approach to the old Jewish quarter in Tetuán, Mellah al-Bali

Abstract

La presencia judía en Tetuán se inició de manera paralela a la refundación de la ciudad por parte de al-Mandari en 1484-85. La convivencia de judíos y musulmanes estuvo regida por el Pacto de Omar. La comunidad sefardí, representada en todos los ámbitos de la escala social, participó de los avatares del destierro, sin discriminación alguna en cuanto a infortunios o beneficios, respecto a sus 'compatriotas' hispanomusulmanes. Los judíos fueron un componente más del tejido social del Marruecos musulmán. En Tetuán nunca antes habían sido obligados a vivir apartados, pero en 1807 un dahir del sultán alauita Mulay Sulayman decretó su traslado a mellah1 al-Jadid. La reocupación y conversión del antiguo barrio judío significó un sistemático proceso de despiece, derribo y reacomodo. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es la aproximación al emplazamiento del barrio mellah al-Bali, así como al tipo de arquitectura doméstica que en él se debió desarrollar. © 2017 Universidad Austral de Chile.; Jews appeared in Tetuán simultaneously with the reestablishment of the city by al-Mandari in 1484-85. Coexistence of Jews and Muslims was ruled by the Pact of Umar. Sephardic communities, represented in every level of the social scale, experienced all the vicissitudes of exile -including misfortunes and benefits- in much the same way as their Hispanic-Muslim "compatriots". Jews were one of the members of the social fabric of Muslim Morocco. Never before were they forced to live apart in Tetuán; but in 1807, a Dahir (decree) by the Alaouite Sultan, Mulay Slimane, required their transfer to mellah al-Jadid. The reoccupation and conversion of the old Jewish quarter involved a systematic dismantling, demolition and rearrangement process. The main goal of this work is to approach the siting of the mellah al-Bali quarter, as well as to the type of domestic architecture that had to be developed there. © 2017 Universidad Austral de Chile.
