dc.description.abstractReuse of cohesive soils in construction works is rare because of both unfavourable geotechnical characteristics and to the specific needs of placing conditions. This paper evaluates the improvement in compactness of a lutitic material (silty soil) present in large areas of the province of Zaragoza, Spain, by mixing with a sandy construction and demolition waste (CDW). The results obtained by the standard Proctor compaction test indicate that the maximum dry density of the mixture is increased from the original silty soil, with a maximum in the 2:1 (silty soil:CDW) ratio. Furthermore, it has been found that the addition of CDW to silty soil greatly reduces plastic behavior of the mixtures in the compaction process, which would allow these materials could be placed on site using conventional compaction equipment. This improvement of lutitic material further entails obvious environmental benefits by allowing both a reduction in construction waste (excavated soil volumes but not reused) and the conversion of a waste to a by-product.
