Restoration of the Rojano Tower in Lorca (Murcia, Spain)

Abstract

In May 2011, Lorca suffered two earthquakes that affected its architectural heritage. The restoration of the Rojano Tower and part of the Islamic defensive wall of the first historic enclosure of Lorca are one of the interventions for the recovery of Lorca heritage. They are rammed earth constructions of the 12th century during the Almohad period, but they were reinforced with masonry in 14th century during the Christian period. The four objectives of the intervention have been: consolidation and restoration of the Tower and sections of the defensive wall; restitution of lost elements in order to improve the comprehension of the layout of the defensive wall; fitting-out of the urban area next to the intervention zone as an urban space for public use and, finally, informative and interpretative actions (didactic panels) that help the visitors to know the medieval urban fabric and the historic context of Lorca. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group.
