Although both tourism and camping have their own history, the emergence of mass tourism in Spain during the 1950s led to a new and unexpected scenario that required rapid adaptation. The transformation of the coastline next to Barcelona is a good example of such an adaptation. Several circumstantial initiatives are illustrative of this rapid and unforeseen reaction. They show how expectations changed between the mid-1940s and the mid-1950s, and how a surprising set of circumstances came together the hatching of campsites that occupied the coast and defined the area for decades.
