Abstract

The agricultural sector is facing a major challenge, its transformation towards the sustainability and circular economy paradigms of the 21st century. In this context of change, sectoral policies emerge to propose guidelines and instructions that help to achieve this, such as the Spanish Circular Economy Strategy and the European Green Pact, which transcend mere bureaucracy, becoming roadmaps towards a more harmonious agriculture with the environment and efficient in the use of resources. It is in this scenario where our Service-Learning project (S-L) is inserted, an initiative that involves students of the double degree of Building and Business Administration of the UPM, together with pre-university students, with the aim of promoting the students' understanding of sustainable agriculture, through urban gardens, and its impact on the local community. The S-L methodology will be implemented through a two-pronged approach: first, students will research sectoral policies and methods of sustainable agriculture; second, they will develop innovative projects such as community gardens or digital applications to support sustainable agriculture. These projects will be presented in a dissemination document that will enable municipalities to encourage the creation of urban gardens and promote sustainable activities in sustainable buildings. Outcomes are expected to include a significant increase in students' knowledge and practical skills in sustainable agriculture, the creation of at least one viable community project, and a measurable positive impact on local agricultural practices. This project aims not only to enhance the students' educational experience through the practical application of their knowledge, but will also contribute to the sustainable development of the local farming community, demonstrating the value of S-L as an educational and social change tool.
